The YOUNG Model 05103 Wind Monitor, which was first created for use with ocean data buoys, measures the horizontal wind speed and direction. It is durable, and corrosion-resistant, but accurate and light. When rotated, a four-blade helicoid propeller used to gauge wind speed produces an AC sine wave signal.
A vane connected to an interior housing’s precise potentiometer determines the wind direction. The sensor is made of UV-stabilized plastic with stainless steel and anodized aluminum components. Precision-grade stainless steel ball bearings with light-contacting Teflon seals and a wide-temperature grease are utilized to assist prevent contamination.
On a typical 1-inch IPS pipe, the sensor is installed. When the sensor is taken out for maintenance, a mounting orientation ring that fits around the sensor’s base keeps it from shifting position. Terminations are formed at a junction box at the base of the sensor via simple clamp-style connections (no special connectors are required) (no special connectors are required).
Units 05103V and 05103L of the Wind Monitor, both scaled for 0-100 m/s and 0-360°, are also available. Both models have outputs of 0-5 VDC or 4-20 mA. The 05103L is suggested for installations with lengthy cables, generally 300 meters (1,000 feet) or more, up to several kilometers, or for high-noise environments.
