Meteoxperts successfully installed an Automatic Weather Station at Engineering Institute !
Introduction
This will be an important tool for monitoring the weather installed at a premium Engineering Institute in India. According to World Meteorological Organization, AWS is defined as "a meteorological station at which observations are made and transmitted automatically". We will be setting up a high-grade system for measuring many parameters of weather with accuracy and reliability, such as temperature, humidity, pressure, wind speed, and direction, rainfall, solar radiation, among many others. This station design allows for readings to be taken automatically at regular intervals, thereby providing a continuous stream of data required for applications in scientific research and forecasting. It is an international standard for climatology and boundary-layer meteorology.
Objectives of establishing AWS network:
? Increasing the density of the existing network by providing data from new sites and from sites that are difficult to access and inaccessible.
? Improved reliability in measurement through state-of-the-art technology and the latest electronic digital techniques of measurement.
? Reducing human failures.
? The weather systems like cyclones, western disturbances, storms, and monsoons shall be kept under constant monitoring. The traditional network of observatories on continental India is inadequate.
Sensors in AWS:
? Solar Radiation Monitoring system: A pyranometer measures solar radiation, namely Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI) and Direct Normal Irradiance (DNI). Diffuse Horizontal Irradiance (DHI).
? Global Horizontal Irradiance: It is the total amount of solar radiation received on a horizontal surface.
? Direct Normal Irradiance: It is a measure of solar radiation that falls directly to earth from the direction of the solar ray, not interfered by the atmosphere.
? Data logger- The data logger is in charge of recording the measurements resulting from the weather sensors and storing them. It is thus, as the brain of the AWS processing and managing the data gathered.
? Wind speed and Direction Sensor- The wind speed and wind direction are measured. This information gives knowledge regarding wind patterns and behaviors.
? Temperature Sensor- It measures the temperature of the surroundings at the location of the weather station.
? Humidity Sensor– It measures the relative humidity, which is a reading that represents the percentage of water vapour in the air compared to the maximum that the air can hold at that temperature.
? Air pressure Sensor – This measures atmospheric pressure and is more normally referred to as a barometer. This information is used in predicting weather.
? Rain Gauge Sensor : Device that measures the amount of precipitation usually in millimeters or inches over a given period.
? Lighting Arrester : This is for protection to the equipment from lighting strikes and surging in power.
Overview of the Project:
In June, MeteoXperts Solutions were afforded the opportunity to install a state-of-the-art weather monitoring station at a very prestigious Engineering Institute for solar climatic research. The climate, vivid for its early and persistent monsoons, created a setting in the city as a challenge for our team. Our target with this installation was to meet schedule requirements, enabling our customer to observe key weather data at the earliest possible time. A customer required a rooftop-level weather station that must withstand strong wind and heavy rainfall loads. Our team accounted for critical environmental stressors such as wind forces, precipitation, atmospheric moisture, and temperature variations when developing the design of the weather station base.
Despite the logistical challenges presented by the monsoon season, our team's expertise and commitment to excellence ensured the successful deployment of the monitoring station. The data collected from this station will provide invaluable information about the weather patterns, helping the Engineering Institute in their important studies.
